More Parking Needed in Historical Areas

Residents in the historical Castelo neighbourhood of Lisbon held an extended meeting with the City Hall in which they asked for parking spaces throughout the area, claiming there were to many bays designated for goods vehicles dropping off and picking up cargo and not enough for residents’ vehicles. Lack of resident parking in historical neighbourhoods has long been a reoccurring topic in City Hall debates. During the meeting, Mayor Costa explained that a building that was to be developed into a car park in Chão do Loureiro, currently owned by EMEL, was to be returned to the City Hall through “ lack of interest on the company’s behalf”. He admitted to bring new families to the older parts of Lisbon it would entail “bringing at least one car per family”, and that “a solution would have to be found for the problem”. A resident’s card is one proposal to resolve the problem, exempting carriers of the card from having their vehicles fined or towed.
